2011 IHDA ICONOCLAST Recipient: Peter Dooney for Dooney & Bourke
Dooney & Bourke was founded in 1975 by Peter Dooney, a leather designer
with a passion for classic American style. Though the company originally
focused on men's belts and accessories, Peter was soon drawn to handbag
design. He found inspiration in bags of every kind, from simple saddle
bags to sophisticated gladstones. Peter’s love for beautiful leather,
old world craftsmanship and classic shapes was evident in his first
collections. The success of these handbags not only helped rekindle
America’s interest in traditional accessories, it also launched Dooney &
Bourke as an iconic American brand. Over the last 35 years, the
collections have expanded to include luggage, briefcases and small
leather goods for both men and women. Despite major growth, the
company’s original commitment has never faltered. Peter Dooney is still
personally involved in the design and manufacture of every product and
the result is evident. To this day, Dooney & Bourke is renowned for
leather goods of exceptional style, uncompromising quality and timeless
appeal which is why Peter Dooney is the 2011 IHDA ICONOCLAST Recipient. |
