| My name is Katrin Reifeiss and for me fashion is about
capturing the beauty of color and pattern. I am committed to the things that
capture my imagination and spirit such as the dye technique Shibori. The Shibori
technique fuels my passion to handcraft beautiful and thoughtful designs. I
design for women who appreciate the subtleties and authenticity represented in
my accessories and clothing. I see my pieces as not bound by time or intended to
be quickly disposed of rather I see them as timeless, season-less pieces to be
worn forever. Each piece is individually hand dyed by me and from the dye
process to the end product, I love seeing the pieces I create come alive.
I like to use unusual fabrics but especially those fabrics that dye beautifully.
The Summer 2012 handbag collection feature silk/hemp and are dyed using a few
types Japanese Shibori techniques. Also I want to use sustainable fabrics as
much as possible and each handbag is lined in organic cotton. My target audience
are women who appreciate the hand dyed qualities and authenticity represented in
my handbags.
In 2006 the line started with a skirt and then grew from there to include
handbags, clothing and other accessories. I love to create pieces that are
special and hand done. Everything is hand dyed by me in my studio in Brooklyn
which I think makes my bags very unique.
Ohh...My biggest nightmare I had was when I was not paying attention to the
ratio of dye I was using, I mixed up TBS for TSP, and proceeded to dye fabric
for a few handbags the entirely wrong color. It was a happy accident in the end
but all the planning, the Shibori technique and dyeing had to be redone.
My greatest achievement is every time I complete a bag. There is something about
looking at a creation I made from dyeing the fabric, creating the handbag
silhouette to sewing that is so awesome, that I created something hand dyed that
can be used as a handbag. I love seeing the pieces I create come alive!
