Most Socially Responsible HandbagWhat country are your bags manufactured?: GuatemalaPlease explain how your bags are socially responsible?: They are made from reclaimed Mayan Indigenous clothing using Fair Trade practices and preserving a 2000 year old textile tradition. I partner with several NGOs in Guatemala, such as CARE, to give back to my artisan's communities through raising awareness and funds for their work in Guatemala. Do you work with local/native artisans to design your bags?: I personally travel to Guatemala several times a year to work directly with my artisans. It is a true partnership: the bags we create are made from their traditional clothing; I give them the designs; they manufacture my designs. Why did you choose this country to have your bags made and what made you decided to give back?: I studied Latin American Studies with a focus on Art, Anthropology, and Literature. After my honor's thesis I traveled alone to Guatemala for 3 months to volunteer on Mayan women's co-op and backpack. I fell in love with the Indigenous women, their textiles, and saw extreme poverty and how very little can make a huge difference in their lives. How have your bags impacted this community?: My company has built houses, paid for education, saved lives through financial ability of one of my artisans to afford a hospital during two problematic childbirths saving her and her two kids.
